Iraqi & Syrian Refugee Crisis

This mass exodus of Iraqis has been described by authorities as “One of the largest and swiftest mass movements of people in the world in recent memory.” Millions of lives hang in the balance, lacking access to the most basic necessities needed for survival. Food, water, shelter, and medical care are desperately needed.

“We have not seen a refugee outflow escalate at such a frightening rate since the Rwandan genocide almost 20 years ago.” –UN Refugee Chief, Antonio Guterres

The Need

Extremists who have been fighting to gain control of Syria for the past three years have now infiltrated border cities in Iraq, sparking yet another refugee crisis in the Middle East.

Genocide has bombarded Iraq’s eastern territories with brutal and unstoppable force.

As we speak, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis—many of them Christians—are running for their lives at this very moment.

Their survival is largely dependent on the provision of basic, life-saving necessities: food, water, medicine, and emergency medical attention.

Bordering nations are already well over capacity, absorbing nearly 3 million refugees from Syria. There are simply not enough resources to keep these people alive. Our teams are strategically positioned to begin responding to the influx of refugees, but desperately require more funding to accommodate the growing need.

Our Response

World Help has been working extensively in war-torn communities in the Middle East since political uprisings in Syria were sparked in 2011. We have actively distributed life-saving provisions to refugees who were forced to leave everything behind.

In recent days, the refugee crisis has escalated to unprecedented levels, leading us to expand our vision to provide immediate aid and relief to a greater number of incoming refugees than ever before.

Our vision is threefold:

  • Rescue Christians who are being persecuted
  • Restore refugees who have been displaced
  • Return families to their homes or assist them in establishing new communities

Our teams are working around the clock to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance—food, clean water, shelter, bedding, hygiene kits, and basic medicines to families in the region who have lost everything.

  • A gift of $20 is enough to provide food and medicine for a refugee child for one month.
  • A gift of $120 will provide food and medicine for six refugee children for one month.
  • A gift of $1,200 to provide food and medicine for 60 refugee children for one month.

The Church

This Christmas, we have an urgent message for the American church: What we are witnessing today is the certain extinction of Christianity as we know it in Iraq . . . and we must do something now, before it is too late. Join us today in being a voice for millions of Iraqis who are suffering for their faith in Christ. It’s not too late to make a difference . . . but we must act now.

There are two simple ways to help:

Commit to taking up a love offering in support of persecuted refugees. These funds enable our humanitarian teams to distribute life-saving items to families in need—food, water, clothing, bedding, and medicine—as well as fund the continued operations of our mobile medical clinics in the area. On the doorstep of the harsh winter months, more supplies are desperately needed.

Join us in solidarity as we intercede for these dear brothers and sisters. Pray for peace. Pray for forgiveness. Pray for an end to injustice, cruelty, and hate. Pray for comfort and reconciliation. Pray for the safety of our teams. Pray for an outpouring of generosity from the American church on behalf of those affected by this staggering crisis.
