“When I Met Godfrey . . .”

Jamie Norton and her family have been sponsoring Godfrey, a 9-year-old boy from Uganda, for over 3 years now. After corresponding through letters for months, Jamie received news that Godfrey had been selected to be a member of the Children of the World International Children’s Choir and would be coming to America to begin the 2010-2011 tour. Then it happened. Jamie was able to meet Godfrey at a Children of the World concert for the very first time.

Here is what Jamie had to say about this incredible experience and the journey of being a sponsor.

What inspired you to be a World Help sponsor?

I was inspired to become a sponsor through a story I heard at a school chapel. The story was about the children of Uganda who were afflicted by extreme poverty and abuse from the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army).

How has sponsorship impacted you and your family?

Our family has enjoyed sponsoring Godfrey. We are able to pray for and be connected to someone so far away, yet so close in heart. We have a board on our kitchen wall with all the pictures and letters we have received of Godfrey. He IS a part of our family!

What are some highlights of sponsorship for you? Are there aspects that are difficult?

The highlights of sponsoring Godfrey are getting the pictures of him each year and seeing how much he has grown. His letters are my favorite part. They help me get to know him a little better. Being able to do something to help enrich his life is such a blessing. Knowing that God has provided this opportunity is a true blessing. The only difficulty is that I would like to be a bigger part of Godfrey’s life.

Describe how you felt when you heard that Godfrey would be coming to the U.S. as a part of the Children of the World Choir?

When I received the letter that Godfrey was coming to California, I cried! It seemed unreal to me. I had always prayed that God would provide a means for us to meet. I know this was God’s plan!

What was it like meeting Godfrey? Describe how the experience strengthened your relationship.

Meeting Godfrey was one of the BEST experiences of my life. I had always felt very connected to him, but meeting him felt like heaven! I didn’t want to leave him that day and I wore a permanent smile on my face for days. It inspires me to become more involved in this mission. Godfrey and I will forever be connected to one another. Our hearts speak the same language.

What advice/encouragement would you give to other sponsors?

Pray for your sponsored child daily. Pray for their families and the people of their country. Encourage others to get involved in this wonderful mission by telling your story and how it has touched your life. The rewards are immeasurable!

Our goal in the Child Sponsorship Department is to provide sponsors with a community that enables them to connect during their time as a sponsor. We hope Jamie’s experience inspires and encourages you in your relationship with the child you sponsor or encourages you to take the first step and sponsor a child today.
