On Saturday, April 25, 2015, an earthquake measuring 7.8 in magnitude shook central Nepal—the strongest recorded in over 60 years—causing thousands of casualties and leaving multitudes more injured or missing.

On Tuesday, May 12, another major earthquake (7.3 in magnitude) struck eastern Nepal near Mount Everest, leaving thousands more injured and reigniting a state of fear and chaos across Nepal.

Buildings collapsed, roads are blocked, and many in rural areas experienced deadly landslides. Waves of aftershocks only intensified the chaos, which is said to have affected an area populated by at least 6 million people, many of whom are in desperate need of shelter and assistance.

OUR RESPONSE

In the immediate days following the earthquake, we are focusing our efforts in Nepal on two crucial tasks:

Emergency Aid and Disaster Assistance: In crisis situations, acting quickly can mean the difference between life and death for thousands. In cooperation with our established in-country aid networks, we are working around the clock to distribute relief supplies to victims of the earthquake including:

• Food
• Clean water
• Medical supplies
• Other critical aid items

Ongoing Relief Development: In the days, weeks, and months ahead, the Nepali people will face a number of overwhelming challenges. Our international development team is working with our in-country staff and partners to determine priorities and develop a long-term plan for providing restoration and support through our well-established programs across the country.

At this time, we’ve identified:
• At least 50 church buildings that were destroyed by the earthquakes. Each church building will cost an estimated $10,000 to rebuild/repair.
• More than 50 homes that need rebuilt. Each home will cost an average of $9,500 to rebuild/repair.

**The churches and homes will be solid brick homes designed to be permanent structures.
