Can You Live Without These Five Bible Verses?

If you could read only five Bible verses for the rest of your life, which ones would you choose?

That may seem like an impossible decision, but thousands of persecuted Christians around the world have had to make that choice. They live in places where God’s Word is either banned or highly restricted, so they can’t get their own Bible.

Instead, many Christ-followers and seekers in countries like North Korea, Iran, and Nigeria rely on memorized verses written on scraps of paper or on pages torn out from Bibles.

Many of them have never even held a complete Bible in their hands. Yet, they continue to draw strength and hope from these hand-scrawled and shared passages of Scripture.

Here are five Bible verses many persecuted Christians can’t live without:

1. John 3:16

God’s Word is filled with promises and encouragement for Christ-followers

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Perhaps one of the most well-known verses in the Bible, John 3:16 is a beautiful and concise explanation of the Gospel.

For Christ-followers facing persecution for their faith, this passage is a demonstration of why they’re willing to suffer for following Jesus. It is the foundation of their hope, strength, and joy in the midst of trials.

Even when Christians face hardship, they know that their temporary suffering is preparing them for eternity with Jesus. It’s an enduring reminder that their pain is temporary and that they have eternal life through their Savior.

2. Romans 8:28

Even in suffering, persecuted Christ-followers can know that God works all things for good

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

When we’re going through trials, it can be easy to think our suffering is for nothing. But Romans 8:28 says the exact opposite: God uses all our circumstances for our good.

For persecuted Christ-followers, that promise holds an incredible hope — that even in their darkest hours, God is working everything out for His purpose. And since God is always good, His plans are, too. His promises will never fail.

3. Philippians 4:13

Persecuted Christians can draw strength from Jesus, their Savior

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

The apostle Paul most likely wrote the Book of Philippians while he was under house arrest in Rome. That means he probably recorded these words as he was suffering for his faith. But even while imprisoned, he drew continued strength from Jesus.

In the same way, Philippians 4:13 is a reminder for modern persecuted Christians that their strength comes through Christ. Jesus also endured arrest, torture, and death before rising again.  He knows what it’s like, and He supplies His strength for His followers who are suffering in the same way.

4. Matthew 28:19

Christ-followers risk their lives to spread the Good News within their countries

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit …”

Persecuted Christ-followers, especially church leaders, often face immense danger as they carry out the Great Commission.

For example, Christian evangelism is officially banned in Iran and North Korea, and telling others about Jesus can mean arrest or even execution in both of these places.

Despite the risks, many persecuted Christians still prioritize sharing the Gospel with others. As a result, God’s kingdom continues to overcome barriers and borders, and more people discover the love of Jesus.

5. John 16:33

In all circumstances, Christ-followers worldwide have one Hope — Jesus Christ

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

In John 16, Jesus tells His disciples about the suffering they would endure for His sake. He also talks about His own coming arrest, death, and resurrection.

But before the end of the chapter, Jesus gives a joyous encouragement: even though we will have trials, we can have peace because He has already overcome the world.

In the same way, persecuted Christians can have peace amid suffering because they know Jesus has already won, and through Him they have victory. As they face persecution for their faith, they know that Jesus is with them in everything, and their suffering is temporary.
