Danielle heard the rumblings. Felt the ground shake beneath her feet.
She and her children barely had time to dive under the bed before the bombs started falling.
They were trapped. The explosions seemed to come from every direction. They grew louder, closer, and Danielle waited for one to land right on top of them.
But eventually, it stopped, and they were all still alive — a miracle. She and her children slowly made their way out of their hiding spot.
The silence was almost as deafening as the bombs had been.
As soon as Danielle stepped outside, she learned why it was so quiet. Sudan’s civil war had left her community in ruins, the bodies of beloved neighbors and family strewn over the road like rag dolls.
The horrific image burned itself into her memory forever.
Danielle realized that if they didn’t flee, it was only a matter of time before her family faced the same fate.
A Nation at War
Millions of people have been impacted by the violent war in Sudan
In April 2023, Sudan became embroiled in a brutal civil war after a power struggle broke out between the country’s army and a paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces.
The ensuing conflict has left hundreds of thousands dead and driven over 11 million people from their homes. The onslaught of bombings, attacks, and kidnappings has forced families to run for their lives.
Many refugees and displaced people have suffered unimaginable trauma and loss. Now, they’re facing a daily battle for survival without the essentials they desperately need.
These are their stories.
Danielle
Danielle and her family fled Sudan, only to be met with poverty when they arrived in South Sudan
As soon as Danielle saw the carnage outside her front door, she and her husband knew they needed to leave Sudan as soon as possible.
They and their four children packed whatever belongings they could carry before setting out on foot, not knowing if they’d ever see their home again.
The walk to South Sudan was miserable as they joined the seemingly endless throng of people fleeing the country. At times, the crowd was pressed together so closely that Danielle could hardly breathe.
After over two weeks of walking, Danielle and her family finally reached a refugee camp in South Sudan … but little did they know that a new battle for survival awaited them.
The camp was running critically low on supplies, and didn’t have stable access to essentials like food, clean water, and medical care. And as more people arrived from Sudan, the needs became even greater.
Every day is a struggle to survive for refugees like Danielle and her family
Danielle and her family have tried to make things work. Her husband earns a small income by hauling supplies in a wheelbarrow at the local market. He puts in as many hours as he can, but it’s never enough to make ends meet.
Meanwhile, Danielle and her children must stay in a crowded tent with dozens of other families. The atmosphere is loud and stifling.
To make matters worse, Danielle is pregnant and has epilepsy, so she often gets sick. Her oldest daughter can’t go to school because she must care for her mom and younger siblings.
For Danielle and her family, help can’t arrive soon enough. And they aren’t alone.
Nafissa
Nafissa has endured great loss during the war in Sudan
Nafissa will never forget the pain she felt when her sons died fighting the war in Sudan …
… or the pain of having to leave everything behind.
But she had no other choice. She’s now responsible for her two grandchildren, who were orphaned by the war, and she knew leaving was their best chance of survival.
Even so, life in South Sudan is far from easy. When Nafissa and her grandchildren crossed the border, they didn’t receive any support to help them get back on their feet — no food, clean water, medical care … nothing.
Nafissa’s greatest dream is a brighter future for her granddaughters, but she can’t even afford the essentials they need now.
All they can do is wait, and time is running out.
Greg
Greg helps other Sudanese refugees while struggling to survive himself
Greg fled one of Sudan’s most war-torn regions in 2023. After arriving in South Sudan, he struggled to find a job and make ends meet.
Despite his own struggles, Greg committed himself to helping others in the refugee camp. After hearing the Gospel, he decided to give his life to Christ and began serving at the local church.
But his troubles were far from over. While he was praying at the church one day, one of the local herdsmen held a gun to Greg’s head. He pulled the trigger, but the gun jammed. The delay gave Greg just enough time to get away, but he was shot repeatedly as he escaped.
Thankfully, Greg survived his injuries. But without access to proper medical care, he’s struggling to fully heal. The camp is on a desolate, remote piece of land, so Greg and the other refugees have nowhere to get essential supplies.
Despite his injuries, Greg is still focused on caring for the other refugees. With rations cut and humanitarian aid scaled back, the need for relief is monumental. Greg prays that his story will motivate others to provide help and hope.
