At World Help, we often talk about being the “hands and feet of Jesus” to people in need. It’s a calling that embodies our pursuit as Christ-followers throughout the centuries. It also captures an important part of World Help’s mission.
But what does it really mean?
The Greatest Example
If we want to know how to be the hands and feet of Jesus, we must first look to Him
Before He ascended to heaven, Jesus commissioned His disciples to take the Gospel to all nations. And as His followers today, Scripture calls us the body of Christ — continuing His work and representing Him in the world.
As His body, one of our biggest responsibilities is to carry on Jesus’ ministry — to be His hands and feet.
Jesus set the perfect example, perfectly demonstrating what that looks like. And when we read the Gospels, we see exactly what it means to be His hands and feet and how to live it out.
During the three years of His earthly ministry, Jesus exhibited His love for humanity by meeting both physical and spiritual needs — not one or the other.
Between healing sicknesses, feeding the hungry, and empathizing with those who were hurting, He preached about the coming Kingdom of heaven and the sacrifice He would make to save sinners and offer us hope for eternity.
And in doing so, Jesus’ life perfectly embodied the crucial connection between caring for both body and soul. He even instructed His disciples to meet both types of needs when he sent them out in Matthew 10:7-8:
“And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.”
Now, more than 2,000 years later, that mission hasn’t changed.
A Mission for the Ages
Over 2,000 years after Jesus’ earthly ministry, we are still called to love others as He did
So how do we apply Jesus’ calling to our lives today?
We become His feet by bringing the Good News of salvation to the lost.
At the same time, we serve as His hands, caring for others in need by meeting physical needs.
By providing necessities like food, clean water, and medical care, you help care for the body while opening the door to share the love of Jesus Christ. That’s because faith means very little when people don’t have access to essentials … but without faith that feeds the soul, meeting those physical needs is just a short-term fix. When you focus on both, the result is true and lasting transformation.
Ultimately, through serving others and sharing the transforming power of the Gospel, we become more like Jesus, shining the light of His love around the world.
Knowing that we are the hands and feet of Jesus also reminds and empowers us to step out in faith to do God’s work, whether that’s giving to meet a specific need, ministering in another country, volunteering at a local non-profit like World Help, or simply spending time with a neighbor or friend in need.
Serving may take us out of our comfort zone, but it will always be for God’s glory — to represent Him to a broken world in desperate need of the Gospel.
