Bahamas

The Bahamas falls into the Atlantic hurricane belt — making the nation prone to natural disasters like hurricanes, monsoons, and tropical storms. The unpredictable weather not only creates food shortages but also contributes to the housing crisis.

In 2019, Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas as a Category 5 storm and destroyed the homes of almost 70,000 people. To this day, more than 17 percent of the population lives without housing. Because the job market relies heavily on tourism, which decreased with the hurricane and again with the pandemic, many people struggle to earn a steady income to provide for their families.
