Nicaragua is the poorest country in Central America and the second poorest nation in the entire Western Hemisphere. Yet, it has some of the highest food prices and energy costs in Latin America. With few jobs available, Nicaraguans struggle to afford food, water, medical care, and other basic essentials.
Additionally, Nicaragua’s geographical location makes it vulnerable to devastating hurricanes. In fact, many communities are still reeling from back-to-back Hurricanes Eta and Iota that hit in 2020.
