FOREST, Va. (WSET)– Hurricane Laura has left more than 700,000 people without power right now.

Laura has since been downgraded to a tropical storm but it made landfall overnight as a Category Four storm.

Noel Yeatts, president of World Help, says this is a huge disaster in our own backyard.

Parts of Texas and Louisiana have widespread destruction.

It was the strongest wind storm to strike Louisiana in 164 years pounding the Bayou state with sustained winds of 150 miles per hour.

Yeatts says there are two main ways you can get involved to help those affected.

1. You can drop off supplies like bottled water, paper towels, and non-perishable foods to World Help’s warehouse in Forest.

2. Or you can donate financially

“They’ve been hit with something that’s already such a huge disaster and we’re not helpless, we’re not powerless, we can make a difference and I would encourage people to get involved,” she said.

Yeatts says they are trying to send trucks with supplies as soon as possible to the affected areas.
