Over half of Ukraine’s children are displaced

It’s been almost two months since Russia invaded Ukraine, and the number of refugees hasn’t stopped growing. Millions of people have fled the country, and many more are displaced within Ukraine.

In senseless wars like this one, innocent people always suffer. But the ones who suffer most are the children forced from their homes. Child refugees leave more than just their houses — they leave their friends, schools, and sometimes even their parents. Any sense of stability they had is completely gone.

This is especially true in Ukraine. Toward the end of March, UNICEF reported that over half of Ukraine’s children have been displaced by Russia’s invasion. That means of the estimated 7.5 million children who call Ukraine home, over 4.3 million have become refugees … and since that report was made, even more children have fled.

These kids need essentials like food, water, shelter, and warm clothes … but those basic resources are hard to come by in Ukraine.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve shared several stories about children who have been affected by the war in Ukraine, each with a different experience.

Refugees like Lubov and her children flinch every time they hear a loud noise, thinking it could be another bomb.

Children like 7-year-old Emilia had to say goodbye to their fathers, not knowing if they’ll ever see them again.

New mothers like Nadiia worry that their babies will never know their fathers.

And within Ukraine, parents like Andrew are willing to risk their lives to feed their children … but there’s not always food to be found.

Becoming a refugee is a traumatic event that will influence the rest of a child’s life, and reports estimate that the crisis in Ukraine is displacing 55 children every minute.

We can’t even begin to imagine what these kids are going through right now.
