Escaping a Dangerous Tradition
As a young girl, Amrita was in danger of being pushed into the sex industry
Many girls from the Banchara community of South Asia have their futures planned from the moment they’re born. That’s because a 500-year-old tradition called nari mata dictates that the eldest daughter of each family enter prostitution as young as age 12 to fund her brother’s dowries.
Amrita, whose name was changed for privacy, thought the same fate awaited her. But God had a different plan for her life.
She grew up with loving parents who tried their best to provide for her. But they struggled under the weight of both poverty and strongly held tradition.
Thankfully, Amrita’s father couldn’t stand to watch his daughter fall victim to the sex industry. Fearing for her safety, he sent her to live at our partner’s children’s home, where she wouldn’t be pressured into a life of abuse.
For Amrita, that was when everything changed.
New Beginnings
As a sponsored child, Amrita found hope for the future!
When she arrived, Amrita met other girls who had also faced the threat of nari mata and escaped. Knowing she was now safe from the sex industry, Amrita was excited for the opportunity to start a new life alongside them.
Amrita was soon enrolled in our sponsorship program. Thanks to her dedicated sponsor, she received a full education, nutritious meals, and a safe place to grow.
But most importantly, through the care of both her sponsor and her teachers, Amrita also learned just how much Jesus loves her! Without sponsorship, Amrita may have never had a chance to learn about Jesus in such a loving, supportive environment.
“Amidst all those evil practices of [the] sex trade, World Help has helped to rescue me … and [gave] me an opportunity to know [the] true and living God,” Amrita said.
An Eternal Transformation
Now, Amrita (pictured above) is working on pursuing her dreams for the future!
Amrita spent eight years as a sponsored child. If it hadn’t been for sponsorship, she may never have escaped a life in the sex trade or known the transforming love of Jesus. That’s why she’s so thankful for the dedication and support of her sponsor.
Now, Amrita has graduated high school and is pursuing her bachelor’s degree. She hopes to use her talents to serve God by becoming a bank manager one day. Amrita is ready to shine God’s light wherever she goes and help lead even more people to the Lord.
No matter what plans He has for her, Amrita will never forget her sponsor’s kindness, compassion, and support. She thanks God and her sponsor for giving her a renewed life and purpose.
“Thank you and God bless you,” she said. “Continue to pray for me and my studies as I look forward to graduating next year.”
