About India

India is a nation that is little more than one-third the size of the United States with a population nearly four times larger. India contains diverse landscape including sprawling deserts, the soaring Himalayan peaks, and tropical coastlines.

Rich in cultural heritage and historical significance, India has become a major economic force in the world. In spite of its recent economic boom, income inequality continues to plague society with almost 58 percent of Indians living on less than three U.S. dollars per day. Several large urban centers contain some of the world’s densest slums where people struggle with limited access to clean water, sanitation, and medical care.

Although education remains a top priority for families, many public schools are overcrowded and understaffed, and parents struggle to afford school fees and supplies.
