China is one of the most difficult places in the world to be a Christ-follower. Many churches must meet in secret, children under 18 are banned from attending religious services, and the distribution of Bibles is restricted.
But this isn’t a new development — persecution has been spreading within the country for years. Even back in 1994, it was dangerous to be a Christ-follower in China and copies of God’s Word were scarce.
Shortly after I founded World Help, I was asked to help distribute Bibles in China. I knew bringing Bibles into this Communist country was dangerous. But the need for God’s Word was overwhelming, and I didn’t hesitate to answer the call.
Christ-followers in China struggle under persecution and Bible shortages
When I got to China, I was taken to a church. The pastor was under house arrest for preaching the Gospel, but that didn’t stop him from planting a house church. And despite the risk, people came to hear about Jesus every week.
As I walked into his house, I saw young people sitting at tables writing. I asked the pastor what they were doing, and his answer shocked me.
They were handwriting the Gospel of John to give to their friends at school the next day because they didn’t have Bibles. With no other way to distribute God’s Word, they spent their free time making copies themselves.
This image has stuck with me for the past 30 years. With Bibles so easy to find in the United States, the concept of having to handwrite copies of Scripture had never occurred to me before then. But it painted a clear picture of the need for God’s Word in China — and all over the world.
