Even though it’s a little more than one-third the size of the U.S., India contains nearly four times as many people. Over 400 million people live in poverty with limited access to clean water, sanitation, and medical care.
Child mortality rates are high, and an overwhelming 148 million children suffer from stunted growth because of malnutrition. Although access to education is improving, nearly half of Indian children drop out before they reach secondary school. Without proper education and vocational training, many children face unemployment as they transition into adulthood.
