Extremely high levels of unemployment and growing income inequality have created dense low-income neighborhoods in Kenya’s cities.

More than 35 percent of the people live in poverty and deal with inadequate sanitation. They also have limited access to proper nutrition and medical care. Agriculture remains the backbone of Kenya’s economy, with over 70 percent of the rural population working on farms. But with an ongoing drought, millions of people have been severely affected by food shortages.
