The Southeast Asian country of Thailand has seen substantial economic growth over the past few decades. However, extreme poverty remains a major issue, especially in rural areas, as over 4.5 million people live in great need.
Coastal areas of Thailand frequently experience damage due to severe weather conditions, such as the tsunami in 2004 that killed an estimated 10,000 people. In addition, the sex industry and drug abuse remain widespread problems. Although education is a top priority for many families, most public schools are overcrowded and understaffed. Girls who aren’t able to complete their educations are often forced into sex work just to survive.
