Men, women, and children in places like Afghanistan are struggling to survive this winter
Setara, whose name has been changed for her privacy, cares for seven orphaned children in Afghanistan. They’re living in severe poverty, and she can’t afford to feed them all.
They regularly collect plastic and sell it for a meager income just to make ends meet. The little money they make is never enough to buy food for all of them, let alone other essentials.
“The kids cry for food and water, but I have nothing to give them,” Setara said.
Winter is especially difficult for Setara. Without a warm home or even money to buy firewood, Setara and the children endure freezing temperatures with little to no protection from the elements. Whenever she does have a little bit of money, she must choose whether to spend it on food or other essentials like firewood and blankets. Even on a good day, she can’t afford both.
“We don’t have a proper shelter. Rain and snow fall on us during the winter,” she said. “We live in the snow and cook under the snowfall. It is very hard.”

Plus, if the children get sick, Setara must use their precious funds to buy medicine. If it’s too expensive, she can only hope they will get better without medical attention.
Unfortunately, Setara’s situation is far from unique. Right now, countless men, women, and children living in poverty worldwide are suffering. Plunging temperatures and continuing food shortages have made survival nearly impossible in many places.
