The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and the kids are out of school. It’s officially summer! And what better time to break out the popsicles, turn on the A/C … and write a letter to your sponsored child!

Not sure what to write? Here are seven summer-themed writing prompts and ideas to make your sponsored child’s day!

1) Write about your favorite outdoor summer activities

After spending the winter inside the house, you’re probably eager to catch some rays outside! Write to your sponsored child about your favorite outdoor summer activity, whether it’s hiking your favorite trails, swimming at the lake, or tending to your garden!

Your sponsored child will love to hear what you like to do during the summer. And don’t forget to ask them about their favorite summer activities. Who knows? You might just discover something new you have in common!

2) Describe what summer is like where you live

Sponsored children will love hearing about your fun summer plans!

Do you live where temperatures reach the triple digits in June? Do you experience your rainiest season in July? Does it snow in August? Tell your sponsored child what the weather’s like where you live!

You can make your letter even more exciting by including a picture of the landscape. Your sponsored child will enjoy comparing your summer weather to theirs — it may be completely different!

3) Share your summer goals and plans

Are you going on any fun trips this summer? You may want to read 10 books this summer, learn a new recipe, or travel to a new state. Or perhaps you’re hoping to pick up a new hobby. Whatever you’re hoping to accomplish this summer, share it with your sponsored child!

And in turn, ask them what their favorite part of summer is and if they’re doing anything special during their break from school. They’ll enjoy bonding with you over shared interests!

4) Make your sponsored child a summer collage

Spend some time making a fun craft for your sponsored child

Take all your favorite and most memorable parts of summer and put them in a collage! This project is easy and fun for the whole family. Plus, it tells your sponsored child a lot about you and gives them a unique piece of art to display.

You can get pictures from magazines, Google, or even old children’s books. With a piece of construction paper and some glue, the possibilities are endless! Just make sure your collage can fit in a standard-size envelope, and you’re golden.

5) Make summer-themed origami

Develop a new skill and give your sponsored child a special keepsake! Hundreds of beautiful origami designs exist for beginners, experts, and everyone in between! Learn to make colorful flowers, animals, or even an ice cream cone. You could also go with an underwater theme and create fish or sea turtles. Whatever you can dream up, there’s probably an origami pattern for it.

This project will be fun for the whole family — and it’ll fit in a standard envelope.

6) Share some fun summer stickers

Stickers are incredibly popular with both children and adults. Your sponsored child is likely no different! You can find fun summer stickers on Amazon or even at your local dollar store. They’re easy to buy and mail with your letter — plus, your sponsored child can put them almost anywhere!

7) Send your sponsored child a seasonal coloring page

In celebration of summer, why not give your sponsored child a fun picture to color in their free time? There are hundreds of printable activity pages online, or you could buy an activity book and take out a page or two. Either way, your sponsored child will be pleasantly surprised when they find it in your next letter!

When writing to your sponsored child, there is no shortage of creative ways to make your next letter extra special! Remember, they love receiving mail as much as you do! Your letter will brighten their day and show how much you care for them.
