Syrian refugees — humanitarian aid & relief

You can help desperate refugees survive and recover

While Jesus was on earth, he practiced revolutionary compassion — the kind of love that has the power to transform and restore — a love that can truly change the world.

World Help was started in 1991 out of a desire to continue this vision. Through centering our mission on bringing physical help and spiritual transformation, we believe God will do the impossible for millions of impoverished people on every corner of the world.

The nation of Syria has been torn apart by ISIS-fueled civil war that broke out many years ago, creating the largest humanitarian crisis of our time. The fighting has resulted in thousands of civilian deaths and a decimated infrastructure and economy.

For Syrian citizens, the situation grows more dire every day as the conflict continues with no sign of relief. To date, half of Syria’s population of 22 million people have been killed or displaced from their homes, 6.3 million of whom remain in the country as refugees, with more than 13 million needing emergency assistance.

Many Syrian refugees have witnessed horrific events and continue to suffer from the violence. Women and children are particularly vulnerable. Primitive refugee camps provide limited relief; overcrowded conditions and exposure to the elements breed disease.

Timely emergency supplies save thousands of lives

World Help has been strategically positioned in the region for many years distributing lifesaving supplies to both internally displaced Syrians as well to the desperate refugees who fled to overwhelmed neighboring countries, Jordan and Iraq. For many, these emergency supplies — food, water, shelter, blankets, hygiene kits, crucial medications and first aid kits — make the difference between life and death. World Help has been able to provide timely lifesaving relief to thousands of refugees thanks to generous donors like you. But there are many more who need immediate help. Adnan: Life as a 6-year-old 'permanent' refugee

6-year-old Adnan is among the desperate refugees World Help has helped recently. Born in 2011, Adnan has known no life other than war and chaos. When Adnan (whose name has been changed here to protect his identity) was seven months old, his house in Aleppo was destroyed by a bomb, killing his brother, grandfather and 11 other relatives. His remaining family attempted to flee to safety but became trapped by warring factions, terrified, under siege for six months without adequate food or water. Adnan’s tiny body wasted away and he almost died.

Adnan’s family finally made it to neighboring Jordan where the five remaining family members huddle in a tiny shelter, sleeping on bare, thin mattresses on the ground. They can’t afford to buy enough food to feed everyone since Adnan’s father has been unable to work due to a severe injury he sustained in the war. World Help stepped in to provide not only adequate food and water for the family, but also to help Adnan’s father receive medical attention for his injury which, hopefully, will allow him to return to work in the future. World Help has also connected Adnan to an educational program which has had a huge impact on his life by enabling him to learn to read and write!

Help refugees recover and restore their hope

In addition to emergency relief, World Help is also helping refugees start to rebuild their lives by providing resources for trauma counseling, a school, job training as well as spiritual programming and development. The benefits of our work are tangible, as further exemplified by the following profile of another family generous donors like you have helped:

Aya: Trying to recover from the trauma of war

Aya is a Syrian refugee who knows the weight of violence and uncertainty (her name has also been changed to keep her safe). She had no choice but to raise her family in the midst of the Syrian civil war. She had always been able to keep them safe … until the day the soldiers came banging on her door and dragged her husband away to be tortured and imprisoned.

After Aya’s husband was released from jail and their family fled to Jordan, they were still haunted by memories of the past and dread for the future. For many refugees, this is a daily reality: escape doesn’t always mean freedom.

Aya’s family remained plagued by the violence they had witnessed even after their relocation. Aya’s husband refused to speak and was too afraid to leave their home. Their young daughter also hadn’t spoken since she saw her father being beaten and taken away. She was traumatized by the atrocities she had witnessed.

Aya’s family was broken. And she was afraid their wounds would never heal.

Then Aya discovered a free clinic — made possible by compassionate supporters — that was ministering to refugees in Jordan. Many of the patients were like Aya’s family and had suffered severe trauma. Patients received medical care and trauma counseling. But most importantly, they had a chance to hear about Jesus.

It was at this clinic that Aya’s husband and daughter received the medical attention they desperately needed. Not only that, they were introduced to a Savior who wanted to heal them spiritually.

During a time when many humanitarian aid organizations are pulling out of Jordan, this clinic continues to provide hope in dire situations. However, it wouldn’t be able to operate without generous contributions from our selfless donors. Assisting people get back on their feet is a key part of World Help’s mission: providing help today for hope tomorrow. But the need is immense.
