From the Field: See the trash dump where Daisy used to work

This week, you’ve heard me talk about Daisy and Wilson, a mom and son in Honduras who used to spend their days in the local garbage dump while Daisy looked for items to sell.

Talking about the dump is one thing … but seeing it firsthand is another.

The video below is just a glimpse at daily life for families in Honduras who are still forced to dig through trash to survive. Poverty drives people to desperate measures. I’ve seen it in Honduras, and I’ve seen it in practically every other country I’ve visited. The good news is that you can help.

Watch the video below to see what life is like for families working in the dump:

Visiting this huge field filled with garbage felt like stepping into another world. Trash was blowing everywhere … there were more buzzards and vultures than I’ve ever seen in my life … stray dogs and children rifled through the same piles of spoiled food.

I won’t even try to describe the stench.

These are conditions that no one should have to endure, but dozens of families — from the youngest toddlers to the oldest seniors — come here every day because it’s the only way they can make a living.

I just stood and watched in shock for a while as these families worked in the midst of all of this filth. Men, women, and so many kids walked around filling up their bags with any kind of recyclable they thought could earn them some money.

It didn’t matter how dirty or disgusting the item was. If there was a chance it could be sold, it went inside the bag.

This is the scene where Daisy’s husband died because he had been forced to eat the food someone else had thrown out … and her precious son, all those years ago, was run over by a garbage truck in the dump.

Sometimes it’s hard to comprehend this level of poverty and desperation when we have so many of our own needs met. It’s hard to even know where to start if you want to help.

But really, the answer is simple. You can start by helping one person.

All it takes is $14.

Just $14 is enough to help provide essentials like food, clean water, medical care, God’s Word, and more for someone in Honduras or another place around the globe.

Will you be the hands and feet of Jesus to someone struggling to survive today?

Your gift will make all the difference by providing urgent physical help and spiritual hope for a person who needs it most.
