The Power of Sponsoring A Child

This month, we will emphasize the power of a relationship between child and sponsor.

Time and time again, World Help staff has been inspired by individuals who go out of their way to tell us how sponsoring children has impacted their entire family on a personal level. Many have turned their sponsorships into a family affair—even visiting their children on missions’ trips. Their sponsored children’s pictures lovingly hang on walls next to family portraits or rest prominently on mantles and bookshelves—a reminder to pray for, write to, and love on children bursting with potential, yet caught in the warfare of extreme poverty.

THE NEED

Poverty, war, disease, social and gender discrimination—they can all but snuff out childhoods. But sponsorship is one of the greatest (and most underestimated) tools we have at fighting back. A monthly gift of $35 provides children in World Help’s sponsorship program with nutrition, clean water, medical care, education, social structure, personal development, and most importantly—the chance to learn about God’s love every day.

These are the fundamental building blocks for true health. Imagine if every child on earth went to bed with a full belly, a strong mind and body, dreams about tomorrow’s opportunities, and the assurance that God was fighting for them. It would change the world.

In 2013, Development Economist Bruce Wydick partnered with Compassion International to assemble the compelling, in-depth study “Does International Child Sponsorship Work?” I encourage you to read through the research and discover for yourself the benefits of the simple (but results-rich) concept of child sponsorship. Here are just a few highlights:

  • Sponsorship increases the probability of a child completing secondary school by 27%–40%
  • Sponsored graduates are 50–80% more likely to obtain a college education
  • Sponsorship strengthens the likelihood that a child will work in a white-collar job as an adult by about 35%

WHAT WE CAN DO

In July, let’s help our readers understand the significance of the relationship between child and sponsor. With so many children waiting for the healing and hope that love can bring, we cannot underestimate the power of sponsor involvement.

This month’s resources include sponsorship stories, images, blog banners, and more. Remember that our Child Sponsorship Program expert Amanda Mattingly is taking your questions in the Facebook blogging group. We look forward to talking more with you there!
